Jennifer Beaton

With this project I wanted to look at people using a Glasgow bus stop.   Unlike the Underground people tend to interact more in the smaller confines of a bus shelter.  I found the interaction or lack of interaction between people in the bus stop and also with myself to be extremely interesting and varied.  When I was there for long enough people would start to ignore me. They hadn’t forgotten I was there, but it was almost as if we had become involved in a performance with people in the bus stop taking the role of actors, playing the part of themselves, and myself in the role of audience/camerawoman.

People were on the whole very trusting and gave a lot of themselves.   In a way sometimes taking a person’s picture does feel as if you are stealing their soul or at the very least gaining a brief glimpse.

Sarah Chiodetto

Sarah is an administrative manager in the University of Glasgow 's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.  She has a passion for travel photography and recent trips have taken her to Albania , Finland , Lebanon and Montenegro .  Her last expedition was to the Galapagos Islands and mainland Ecuador . Of her participation in this exhibition she says:

"lt was very refreshing to do something different and close to home for a change.  I asked family, friends and colleagues who live and/or work in Glasgow to gather together five items of particular significance to them.  Some chose objects of direct personal value, while others selected items that were representative of a theme.  In most cases, the individual collections were a combination of the two approaches.  After discussing the items, I set about preparing a still life, on occasion in conjunction with the participants.  It was an enlightening experience with discussions about the items revealing interesting aspects about people close to me of which I was unaware.  For those participating, it was an opportunity to think about and express what was important to them in different dimensions of their lives.”

“Reflecting on the various compositions, common themes emerged:  the strength of current and historical family ties;  an enthusiasm for music, art, literature, travel, photography and sport;  a passion for learning throughout life;  and recognition of one’s achievements.”

Peter Hoebe

I'm a 32 year old PhD student Biology and interested in nature photography as well as cultural subjects and city views.

Photography has always interested me in a way that a single image can contain tiny details which you didn't see before but enrich the photo in its own way.

John Irwin

I have been creating digital images for 7 years  which focus on the dichotomy between nature and human heritage. The unnatural manmade objects depicted, once used and left to perish have understood that they cannot stop the process of decay, so join and flow with it, creating a new existence and purpose.  This concept originates from my background in Archaeology and relates closely to my current position as an educator in Glasgow Museums.

Photographs:  5 x  A3 prints, printed onto 3mm MDF

Andy Kerr

Retired mechanical design engineer

I enjoy the making of photographic images. I photograph subjects that interest me. For this project I selected Buchanan Street as a subject. My initial conceptions changed as the project developed. I found that I became more interested in people. Not portraits but more how people see themselves either in the building motifs or in how they present themselves.

Photographs:

Buchanan Street Composite No1
Buchanan Street Composite No 2
Buchanan Street Composite No 3

I would be happy to arrange unframed copies of the images in whatever size. Costs would be printing charges plus a handling charge.

I've been living in Glasgow for more then a year.
Photography is painting with light but for me it's also creating stories, playing with imagination. Photos shows objective world in the subjective way. I really like architecture of this city especially old and forgotten buildings can create very unusual image .Glasgow- where the past and the future is right next to each other.
Shadows of the past as a space for something new, waiting and watching... memories and hopes...yesterday and tomorrow.

That's me.

Photographs: 5, format 8x10.

Having used 35 mm film and SLRs, first a Praktica LTL and then a Nikon F301, for many years, I changed to digital a few years ago and have not looked back.   Currently I use a Nikon D70 and am mastering the mysteries of Photoshop Elements which allows me to manipulate images in a way which I could never hope to do with film.   This new flexibility has rekindled a lifelong interest in photography.

For this exhibition I started out to look for interesting old, derelict or disused buildings around the centre of Glasgow .   The results taken on dull January days were not inspiring!   However, I realised that almost every time I photographed something old that there was something new in the background.   This became the theme of my set of photographs.   So, for example, when you look at the derelict building at Govan docks, you will see the reflective glass walls of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the background.   Each photograph has this theme of the contrast between old and new.   I addition, I have manipulated each image to give, hopefully, a more dramatic and perhaps slightly surreal effect.

All photographs are available to purchase - details on request.

Alistair McVicar

At present I work as a Planning Engineer with ScottishPower Energy Networks.  Outside work I am a director of UCS Football Trust, whose Trust members are owners of Clydebank Football Club.  I am now the official photographer of Clydebank F.C. after inheriting the post from my brother who went on short holiday (three years ago).  I also supply the local newspaper (Clydebank Post) with sporting pictures on a weekly basis.

The aims of my main photographs in the exhibition are to show the transformation of buildings from day to night and how they add to the local area.  Three of the pictures are of buildings within Glasgow ’s new financial district with the others coming from Govan and Partick.

At weekends my photography is aimed at raising the profile of Clydebank F.C. both within the local community and wider afield.

During the workshop, it has been a pleasure learning from all involved taking account of their comments in order to improve my photography.

Photographs: I have prepared 7 photographs (5 large & 2 small) for display in the exhibition, I have attached details of the 5 main photographs along with daytime pictures (follow this link)

These photographs are from an ongoing project exploring Retail Parks.

For hundreds of years the market was a place where people came to buy, sell and socially interact. Not only were goods on display so were the people … in Richard Sennetts phrase they were the Theatre du Monde

Modern retail parks have allusions to the past and reflect myths that are embedded in their titles:

  • nobility and power – The Fort, The Castle

  • urban industrial heritage – The Forge

  • rural idyll – Lakeside . Middlebrook

  • mythology itself – The Phoenix

No longer open public territory, retail parks are private places where the public are allowed under proscribed conditions. The structure is in the name. It is about retail not social interaction and public display. It is a park, an urban designed space for approved and monitored leisure activity.  In this case to consume and leave.

Photographs: 2 - 30 x 20 inches. Available framed £250

Linda Smith

I am a mature student studying Graphics and Illustration at Anniesland College Glasgow. I am passionate about photography and love to travel in particular to Iceland, Norway and the mountain villages of Spain.

Although taking travel shots for many years, it is only in the last two years that I have thought deeper about the images I collect and attempted to give real meaning to them. The pieces I have selected for this exhibition reflect Glasgow's best asset, it's people, the space they occupy and the visual and real impact they make.
